“Let us be concerned for one another, to help one another to show love and to do good. Let us not give up the habit of meeting together, as some are doing. Instead, let us encourage one another all the more, since you see that the Day of the Lord is coming nearer.” ---Hebrew 10,v 24-25
In the past few weeks, I have been a part of a new Sunday School class here at church and a men’s study group that meets in a local business very early on Friday’s. I thank God that, in this short time, I have realized numerous blessings in both meeting groups. In the men’s group last week a couple of younger guys were in attendance. They are probably 17 and maybe 20 at the most. The younger of the two, is still in high school. Like I said, this group meets on a Friday, a school day at 6:00 am. I was impressed and pleased that a teenage male would get up at 5 ish to go to a bible study full “old” guys. During this particular study we all took turns at reading part of the scripture in Phillipians. After a short part of the reading of 2 verses by someone, the other young man spoke up and commented that he had never heard those verses of scripture read like it was before and how it shed new light on what it meant. This had two effects on me. First, the importance of meeting together, being sincere in your hunger for the Word, and holding the use of scriptures at the highest regard. The second was the fact that it is so important how we read the scriptures; quietly when we are alone and out loud when we are teaching or participating in a class or study. I realized that taking your time and reading correctly, following the punctuation and letting the meaning come out is so important. I hope I can learn from that situation, and take that into the classroom on Sundays.
Which brings me to the new Sunday School class that was started. We seem to have found a video series that everyone enjoys. The insight that the speaker, Robb Bell, brings is very interesting and informative. Blending Old Testament history and relevance in with the New Testaments revelation is very appealing. The way he weaves this story is a way that sheds new light on old verses. I have also realized the blessings of the Holy Spirit highlighting the words of scripture when we are sincere and thirsty for His word.
That young man was encouraged the other day. I hope that little moment of reading has a lasting and profound effect on him. That his hunger grows and so does his faith and relationship with the living God. And in turn, he will some day help someone grow closer in their relationship and encourage them.
I hope Mr. Bell is not the only “glue” to the class. His videos can only last so long. Let us not give up on meeting together!
In Christ,
Jeff Moore
